Aperture 3

I was really excited that Apple finally came up with a new update, Version 3,  for Aperture the . They have added a lot of extra feature that were supposed to be there since long time ago. In Aperture 3, there are very interesting features that will help in organizing albums and folders and enhancing the image work flow like: Face Detection, edge-aware brushes, and presets.

My Experience

Once I installed Aperture 3 using a new trial library , it worked perfectly without any problems. After that, I used an existing library from Aperture 2.  In order to do that you have to upgrade the library to be comparable with the new database. It worked perfectly for me, however, it didn’t work for some users. so please make sure that you have already backed up your files before any installation or testing.once the upgrade is successful, Aperture 3 started doing two things:

1- processing 118 imaged in my database. to be honest I could not find out which files were being processed. So, I left the computer for the whole night and the percentage of the processing when I got up in the morning was 0% …. ??!!

2- face detection that sucked my memory .. used about 2.7 out of 4 physical memory as shown by the Mac’s Activity Monitor.

I had to shutdown the machine physically every time I start Aperture 3…  In order to overcome this issue I had to start Aperture in 32-bit mode as advised by a friend to reduce the memory usage .. then I had to disable the Faces Detection functionality from Preferences and let all 118 thumbnail processing finished .. then I started Aperture 3 again in 64-bit mode ..

Finally, i’m working with Aperture 3 now.. Faces will not work properly unless Apple relaese an update that prevents this from happening

  • The update is recommended for all users of Aperture 3.

This update improves overall stability and addresses a number of issues in Aperture 3, including:

Upgrading libraries from earlier versions of Aperture
    Importing libraries from iPhoto
Importing photos directly from a camera
Memory usage when processing heavily-retouched photos
    Face recognition processing
Adding undetected faces using the Add Missing Face button
    Printing pages containing multiple images
Printing photos and contact sheets with borders and metadata
Editing photos using an external editor
Display of images with Definition and Straighten adjustments applied
Zooming photos in the Viewer and in the Loupe using keyboard shortcuts
Accessing Aperture libraries on a network volume
Selecting and moving pins on the Places map
Adding and editing custom locations using the Manage My Places window
Switching between masters when working with RAW+JPEG pairs.

  • you have to give a shot though .. it's nice to work with, improved a lot
  • If you check the Apple discussion boards you will see a lot of people ranting it. However, Apple surely will release an update very soon, which is why I haven't upgraded yet.
